More Scada Risks

December 1, 2011

Over the past few weeks there have been a few more high profile stories about hacking water utilities in the US via the SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) systems. The first instance was in Springfield, Illinois and the water pump was allegedly burnt out by attackers repeatedly turning the unit on and off via stolen credentials from the manufacturer. Turned out the “hack” was a legitimate contractor working abroad but, employees had noticed intermittent problems over the past couple months, but were unable to determine the cause. In the second case in Houston Texas, a hacker was able to get into the sewer system by guessing a simple 3 character password on a control system that was exposed to the internet.

Neither one of these cases would have have even been news if common sense security practices were put in place and followed. In both instances, providing a secure authentication measure from an internal network along with regular system monitoring would have stopped or alerted employees. Even easier, having a secure password and not exposing the sensitive system to the internet would have eliminated the breach.

With Stuxnet and now Duqu targeting the notoriously insecure and missconfigured SCADA systems, it’s only a matter of time before a major catastrophe occurs. Basic security, if not advanced, principles should at least be applied. Shouldn’t the systems running our nation’s basic infrastructure have more security built in and followed than the corporate email accounts that usually get more attention?

Q&A: How do Recruiters Recognize Me Even Though I’m Passive?

December 1, 2011

QUESTION:
“Many of my colleagues discuss opportunities that they are contacted about on LinkedIn, various jobs boards, and other social networking tools. Although I’m not actively searching for new opportunities and I’m extremely happy with my current employer I would still like to know what’s out there. I’m wondering how I can make myself more visible and more prone to hearing about potential job opportunities that corporate and agency recruiters are working on. Do you have any advice or suggestions to help me out?”

ANSWER:
This is a great question and it is something that is very easy to do with very little effort or time. The best way for recruiting firms and companies to notice you as a passive candidate (someone that isn’t actively looking for a new opportunity) is to utilize LinkedIn. If you aren’t currently on LinkedIn, you might want to consider activating and setting up an account. The service is free and the professional networking tool guides you through the necessary steps to complete your profile. LinkedIn is widely used by recruiters today to contact potential candidates about positions that may peak their interest or to network for referrals.

The tool works just like any other search engine so you want to think “optimization” when creating your profile. What keywords would a recruiter type in when looking to fill particular positions? Example: If you’re a Network Engineer with a CCNP you’ll want to make sure that CCNP (Cisco Certified Network Professional, spell it out as well because you never know what someone will search) is in your profile a couple of times so that you come up at the top of the search. You’ll also want to list as many keywords as possible in your profile. What types of equipment or software technologies have you used? List them. You need to optimize your profile as much as possible if you want people to find you. Also consider listing your contact information such as a home number or personal email address. This will save the “lazy recruiter” time in figuring out how to reach you. LinkedIn even has an area to list what you’d be interested in hearing about (career opportunities, consulting opportunities, etc.).

Outside of LinkedIn, you might consider a confidential posting on one of the many job boards. You should also remember to optimize your job board posting as well. The more key words the better. By completing the profile and posting on a board or two you’ll be contacted about opportunities in no time.

It’s a Party!

December 1, 2011

At Winter DreamHack 2011 the world record was set for the largest LAN (Local Area Network) party and computer festival consisting of 12,754 computers and 13,608 visitors. DreamHack is a digital festival for Local Area Networks (LAN) comprised mostly for online gaming and hacking purposes that is held twice a year in Sweden. This year the event, taking place from November 24th-27th, is projected to hit 20,000 users. So how are they going to support this volume? Cisco and Telia have built the world’s fastest internet connection with speeds of 120 gigabits per second and just to put that in perspective, the previous DreamHack record is 20 gigabits per second. With a combination of Cisco hardware and Swedish ISP’s fiber network you can presumably download a movie in 47 thousandths of a second and simultaneously stream music with up to 750,000 people. The system uses Cisco’s CRS-3 router’s that are capable of speeds up to 322 tbps which would allow China’s entire population to conduct a video call at the same time.

Members from Cisco, Telia, and DreamHack have been working on this network dating back to summer of last year. Gamers salivate at the opportunity to play their favorite games on the fastest network in the world and Cisco and Telia love for the gamers to test the limits of their new network. Head of Broadband services at TeliaSonera, Stefan Trampus says that with the demand of broadband services and faster speeds evolving every day that Telia has invested 5 billion in fiber networks. Cisco alone will have $45 million dollars’ worth of equipment at DreamHack, not including Telia’s contribution.

DreamHack initially started in the early ‘90s when a group of people from Malung would gather in an elementary school basement. In 1994, the first year it garnered the name DreamHack, the event became larger and was hosted in a school’s cafeteria. By 1997 the event took place in Arena Kupolen in Borlang and became the largest LAN party in Sweden and the third largest LAN party in Scandinavia at the time. In 2002 the event became biannual with the summer session held in June and the winter session held in late November. Today, DreamHack offers demo and gaming competitions, displayed on large projection screens, as well as several outdoor activities to include bungee jumping, laser tag, and kart racing. At Winter DreamHack 2010 the StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty gaming tournament held a grand prize of $30,000.

VTC Usage on the Rise

November 1, 2011

Over the past decade we’ve witnessed the business world transform from local and regional reach to domestic and even global reach for large and small businesses alike. The popularity of social networking, cloud computing, and virtual environments has granted access to sales territories in foreign markets that were previously unimaginable. One of these great advances is the widespread availability of VTC (Video Teleconferencing), a technology that allows two or more locations to interact through two-way video and audio transmissions. This eliminates the need for travel between locations for brief meetings or conferences thus greatly reducing costs in the corporate world. More than 1,800 corporate users that have VTC access were recently polled and of them more than 54% agreed that use this technology on a frequent basis. The widespread use of Skype and similar services makes VTC accessible to people worldwide and little to no cost and the introduction of Apple’s “Facetime” on the iPhone 4 has people becoming more and more comfortable with VTC by the day. The future of VTC seems almost limitless as this technology is being incorporated into mobile/hands-free devices and it will inevitably become a day to day part of our lives in years to come. As costs decrease and more public and private sectors purchase and install VTC capabilities we’ll truly become a world with no boundaries and endless opportunities for business and social interaction.
